"Like the study of science and art, accounts of historical events can be intrinsically fascinating. But they have a wider significance. I believe that people are better able to chart their life course and make life decisions when they know how others have dealt with pressures and dilemmas---historically, contemporaneously, and in works of art. And only equipped with such understanding can we participate knowledgeably in contemporary discussions (and decisions) about the culpability of various individuals and countries in the Second World War. Only with such understanding can we ponder the responsibilty of human beings everywhere to counter current efforts at genocide in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia to bring the perpetrators to justice."
"...we humans are the kinds of animals who learn chiefly by observing others---what they value, what they spurn, how they conduct themselves from day to day, and especially, what they do when they believe that no one is looking."
----Howard Gardner, from The Disciplined Mind, published in 1999

Preview of Coming Attractions; or, ...Silence Is the Mother of Violence (Silent All These Years)

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month here in the U.S.
Here at neroli.108 we will not only observe this, but look at the topic of violence against women in total.
I'm going to be digging in the dirt.
I invite you to stay with me, dear reader:
most likely I will need your support.

Thanks, Captain. It's probably going to be a bumpy ride.
I'm glad that you'll be along for it.
And you do know that you provide support against such things *everyday*---by being a good husband, a good father.
It's the "ordinary" that *is* actually the *extraordinary* when it comes to these things.
Your superhero/actionfigure/captain persona isn't posturing---you've got the cred.
Anyone who says otherwise is itchin' for a, well, hmmm...a spirited discussion ;-)

Thank you, Diane---I'm glad you'll be along for the ride as well.
I'm interested to see how it all will work out: I may think one way, and it may be another!
We'll see.
I'm open to the possibilities; I'm looking to the wisdom that you and all our dear blogging friends will bring to bear on the matter.
Once I made the decision, I felt afraid.
Now I feel expectant.
See you soon.

These last few years I've been sharing my abuse-ridden childhood with friends- very cleansing to lay it out and confront it head-on, so... of course I give my support to you.

Dear Pel, you are, as always, the best of company.
I continue to find more reasons as to why that is so.
Thank you, and see you soon.
